Which benefits broker earned the most from employer health plans?
Marsh McLennan Agency reported the most in plan year 2024: $528,459,874 in commissions and fees from 5,659 employer plans, followed by Lockton ($431M) and Mercer ($393M).
How are health insurance brokers paid?
Carriers pay brokers a commission, usually a percentage of premium, and some employers pay fees directly. Both appear on Schedule A of the employer's Form 5500. Across 4,574 commission-paying, fully insured medical plans in 2024, the median commission was 3.8% of premium, with a middle half between 2.7% and 5.0%.
Where does this data come from?
From the U.S. Department of Labor's public Form 5500 dataset. Every employer health plan with 100 or more participants must file Schedule A naming each insurance contract, the carrier, the premium, and the brokers or agents paid on it. BenefitsLedger groups those rows by broker name.
